He's going to be leaving on August 10th for a 12 month unaccompanied deployment to Diego Garcia. A tropical atoll island in the middle of the Indian Ocean...looks rough doesn't it!!

He'll be the SMO aboard the USS Emory S Land.
In layman's terms this means he's going to be the senior medical officer (a promotion) on board a subtender. He's going to be in charge of all the medical needs (partly administrative) of all those on his ship, the subs his ship works with, and a few other ships also stationed at Diego Garcia. Families aren't allowed on the Island, so that part really stinks. Hopefully his ship will port in cool places like Singapore or Australia! Time will tell!

It's going to be a tough year, but their is a payback. Since he's going to do an unaccompanied year, they allowed us to choose our next duty station. We chose Naples, Italy and will be going there in August 2011 for 3 years! We are very excited about this opportunity for our family. The deployment won't be easy, but it could be a lot worse so we're happy about how everything has come together. We'll keep you all updated on any changes...it is the military after all!

Congratulations! So glad that it's official. Now all we have to do is start saving so we can visit you in Italy!

Yes congratulations!!! And I dito the above comment. We will TOTALLY crash your pad in Italy someday! In the mean time, we are excited you will be back "home" with us here in Sconnie! Lots of love to your family.
That sounds awesome! It'll be tough, but you'll get through it. I remember when my dad was stationed on a carrier for a year when I was a kid. We never saw him since he was always deployed, but I do remember getting lots of cool souvenirs from Africa, Thailand, and the Phillipines! But Naples should be amazing!
Wow! That is crazy and exciting all at the same time! I'm sure the year will be roughest for you as a temporarily single mother trying to stay sane while your hubby's away. I love the Italy part though and what a great way to reunite! Love you!
Very cool! Good luck with it all!
I wish I had some cool phrase to say here in Italian...something along the lines of "You are going to have some amazing life experiences in the next few years...can we sleep on your floor one night en route to Croatia?" heh heh! Glad everything is in motion, and one year will go by fast knowing the excitement waiting on the other side! We miss you guys!
Oh girl be tuff.
You should give Keriann B. a call. She was a sigle parent for awhile.
Soooo are you taking reservations for Italy? I need a room for 2 adults and NO kids...
