Carley is 4. She attends Spanish public school for 5 hours every day. She is learning a lot of Spanish. Sometimes she says things that allow you to see into how her little mind thinks and processes all the information we've been throwing at her the last few months.
About a week ago she came to me and said, "Mom, when are we going back to see Grandpa in English World?" I was surprised at her word choice and also curious so I replied, "What? what is English World?" She said, very matter of factly, "you know," (picture her hands out to her sides saying duh mom) "back in Misconsin, where grandpa lives, AND they speak English." I said, "Oh, so where are we living now?" (now the hands have moved to the hips because she can't believe that I'm asking such stupid questions) "Mom, you know we live in Spanish World." Now back to me, barely able to keep the laughter in, "Oh, I didn't realize this was Spanish World. Well we live here now.........".
I had to laugh, and admire her at the same time. It's not bad reasoning for a 4 year old!
Sometimes I forget that while I understand what I'm doing on this crazy adventure, my kids might have other ideas. Kids often have a different take on how life around them functions...and now mine have been thrown into a completely foreign sphere. It's amazing when they say things that allow us to see how they are dealing with this new environment.
This short, quirky conversation has become our families defining reference when talking about our extended family and friends back in "English World." At the end of the day, please know whether you live in Spanish World...or English World, we love you, miss you and are thinking of you often!
