I knew today was going to be a travel day, but it ended up being almost a total bust! We drove to the airport early this morning and arrived in Rome around 11am. The plan was to get the rental car and head straight down to Naples and visit Herculaneum this afternoon before checking into our hotel in Pompeii.
That's not exactly what happened though...first we wasted about 2 hours because we got sent by our gps in the wrong direction. We didn't realize it until we were a ways into town and after we doubled back we had to sit in traffic, forever. Finally we were once again headed in the right direction. Ok, the bugs were worked out, or maybe not. We lingered a bit too long over lunch and would have to deal with Naples traffic if we stopped in Herculaneum, so we decided to switch our visits to Pompeii and Herculaneum. We pressed on to Pompeii and arrive at our hotel in the late afternoon. We drove over to Pompeii, more bad news. They were closing early. So typical, close early, I don't know why I was surprised that they hadn't noted winter hours on their website. Then we thought, ok, well we'll just go for the last 2 hours and then come back tomorrow morning. That's not an option, they don't do any sort of 1/2 off ticket or late in the day tickets, you have to pay full price for each admission. We weren't about to do that because it's a bit pricey, so we wandered around town and had an early dinner instead. The day was a bit disappointing, but I guess some days are like that when you're traveling.
